HCMC waterway tourism

HCM City water tourism.

HCMC waterway tourism businesses in still face many difficulties when it comes to attracting more tourists heard a conference on the city’s waterway tourism development held on July 5. To address the situation, the city needs to implement the waterway tourism development project with the participation of all districts, and particular attention paid to infrastructure quality, Deputy General Director of Saigontourist To Tan Dung said.

The city will maintain an 800m wharf at Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi Port to serve customers of local floating restaurant boats. It will upgrade the port at Hai Thuong Lan Ong street, also known as the city’s oriental medicine street. In addition, Ho Chi Minh City’s tourism sector has been working with neighboring provinces to create middle-range tourism products along the three rivers of Saigon, Dong Nai, and the Mekong.

The deputy head of the Economic and Budget Committee under the municipal People’s Council, Cao Thanh Binh, pointed out that infrastructure investment in the city’s waterway tourism remains modest, and there is a lack of systematic cooperation between travel companies and relevant agencies. Besides, the city has yet to complete its tourism development plan, which is a spanner in the work for the building of local tourism products, he added. At the conference, representatives from the municipal Department of Transport proposed several measures to improve waterway tourism, namely the acceleration of major waterway routes, the construction of Binh Loi railway bridge on Saigon River, and a project to replace all unqualified bridges. The department also plans to upgrade the Saigon-Khanh Hoi Port so it can receive domestic and international passenger ships in the future.

The conference saw more than 30 reports analyzing activities in waterway tourism in the city and its sustainable development. The ideas proposed in the conference will be collected and sent to the municipal People’s Committee and then to be delivered at the upcoming session of the People’s Council. The Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area, downstream of the Dong Nai-Saigon river system, is surrounded and traversed by nearly 1,000km of rivers and canals, with huge potential for waterway tourism plans in the future. Waterway tourism in the city is expected to receive about 450,000 tourists in 2018 and the figure is projected to increase by 15 percent in the following years.

BBQ banned on Vung Tau beach

Tourists will no longer be able to have a barbeque feast on the Vung Tau beach as the coastal city is seeking a better environment for tourists. The ban on all food businesses on the beach – mostly seafood BBQ provided by local tourism cooperatives – officially comes into effect on April 26.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau – Tourists will no longer be able to have a barbeque feast on the Vung Tau beach as the coastal city is seeking a better environment for tourists. The ban on all food businesses on the beach – mostly seafood BBQ provided by local tourism cooperatives – officially comes into effect on April 26. “No cleaning up after meals left the beach very dirty and polluted,” the municipal People’s Committee Deputy Chairwoman Truong Thi Huong said.

The pleasure of eating freshly-cooked seafood with a beer on the 1,200m beach had become the norm for tourists visiting this southern city.

Reports by the Vung Tau People’s Committee reveal there are some 100 businesses, under the management of the two largest tourism cooperatives Vung Tau and Thuy Van, which rent beach chairs and provide cooking services to the beachgoers.

“Tourists can now have their meals at restaurants or bistros near the beach. Cooperative members who want to continue their businesses can move to the busy Vung Tau tourism market instead,” Huong said.

It will take a while for tourists to get used to the ban. The authorities are deploying officers at the entrance to the beach to inform visitors not to bring raw food or alcohol to the beachfront.

“The officers will direct them to the Vung Tau tourism market where they can cook the food,” she said.

She added tourists are still allowed to bring cooked food and non-alcoholic drinks to the beach. Those who do not clear their trash will be fined. More trash bins will also be placed along the beach soon.

The third Cai Rang Floating Market Culture and Tourism Festival will take place in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho from July 7 to 9.

CAI RANG FLOATING MARKET FESTIVAL – The third Cai Rang Floating Market Culture and Tourism Festival will take place in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho from July 7 to 9. This year’s festival aims to respond to Vietnam Tourism Day (July 9) and honor and promote the images and culture of Cai Rang floating market – a national intangible cultural heritage.

A number of activities will be held during the three-day festival, including a book exhibition, a photo exhibition, a seminar, a composite boat race, a parade of tourism boats, and the making of record-sized banh xeo (a type of savory crepe) – a specialty of southern Vietnam. The festival will also feature a display of local delicacies, cultural activities and folk games.

According to Nguyen Van Luan, Deputy Director of the Can Tho Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, this year’s festival will be held on a larger scale than previous years, with 14 activities, including four new activities and 10 upgraded activities to become a more unique and attractive festival, thereby attracting more domestic and foreign tourists.

The Cai Rang Floating Market, located about 6km from the center of Can Tho city, has been around for centuries. It is a prime example of the waterway market culture in the southwestern region, where people buy and sell goods on boats.

Digital projects helps preserve Hue historical monuments

Digital project helps preserve Hue historical monuments. The Prime Minister approved an Adjusted Planning Framework for the Complex of Hue Monuments from 2010-2020 in June 2010, laying grounds for the province’s preservation work. As the result, more than 170 relics have been preserved, repaired and restored so far, including Ngo Mon (Meridian Gate), Dien Thai Hoa (Palace of Supreme Harmony), Hien Lam Cac (Pavilion of Radiant Benevolence from On-High), The Mieu (Complex of the Temple for the Worship of the Nguyen Emperors), Cung Truong Sanh (Truong Sanh Royal Palace), Dan Nam Giao (Esplanade of Sacrifice to the Heaven and Earth), Tomb of King Gia Long and Chua Thien Mu (Celestial Lady Pagoda).

DIGITAL PROJECTS HELPS PRESERVE HUE HISTORICAL  MONUMENTS:  A data digitization project has been implemented in the Complex of Hue Monuments in the central province of Thue Thien – Hue to improve the management and preservation of Tu Duc Tomb and An Dinh Palace. The project is a partnership between the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre, and two US firms – CyArk and Seagate Technology. Accordingly, all the data and images capturing Tu Duc Tomb and An Dinh Palace will be turned into photo-real 3D models to help enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the research, conservation, and restoration of Hue Monuments.

Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre Phan Thanh Hai said CyArk and Seagate Technology are leading providers of data storage solutions in the world and this is the first time they have worked on an important cultural preservation project in Vietnam. Technologies provided by Seagate enable CyArk to store, protect and process safely the relevant data that it collects, he said.

To implement the project, CyArk conducted aerial surveys by unmanned aircraft drones, terrestrial laser scanning known as LiDAR, and field observation at Tu Duc Tomb and An Dinh Palace. CyArk will produce 3D models and architectural drawings to aid the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre in the conservation and management of the site.

Seagate and CyArk will support each other both in the field and the office with their data-storage solutions. Hai said the effectiveness of this project is not only reflected in the aspect of advanced storage technology to help manage, preserve Hue’s relic sites with 3D models and promote cultural values of the complex but also helps popularize knowledge of history, culture and architecture to people, especially youths, thus raising their awareness of protecting the national cultural heritage sites.

The digital preservation project also helps promote the global prominence value of Tu Duc Tomb – the relic site that has important cultural significance for Vietnamese people, he added. The Complex of Hue Monuments site has suffered from the effects of wars, as well as modern development and expanding human settlements. In addition, climate change and natural disasters such as floods are other potential problems for the long-term management of the monuments.

The central province of Thua Thien-Hue has put many efforts to preserve and restore relics of the UNESCO-recognized Complex. The province has allocated over 1.46 trillion VND (64.24 million USD) for funding the relic preservation and restoration between 1996 and 2017, including 933 billion VND (41 million USD) for the 2010-2017 period.

The Hue Monuments Conservation Centre has carried out several studies to learn about ancient brick flooring, wells, and history of each monument inside the complex. It has also collected royal decrees of the Nguyen Dynasty, produced publications on royal records and heritages and made archives of Nha Nhac (Royal court music) – intangible heritage recognized by UNESCO  in 2003. The centre has been supported by international foundations, institutes and organizations from Japan, the US, France, Germany, and Poland, which provided funding for the conservation and training for its staff to improve their capacity. Japan has provided aid for relic conservation in Hue since 1990.

The first large-scale project with Japanese funding, 100,000 USD, was to restore the Ngo Mon – the main gate to the Hoang Thanh (Imperial City) and a symbol of Hue. A team of experts from Germany helped restore frescos in An Dinh Palace while those from Poland have supported the province in white ant prevention and restoration of To Mieu Temple Complex.

Hung King museum

Part of the Hung Temple Historical Relic Complex, Hung King National Museum in Viet Tri city, boasts a unique architecture and embodies Vietnam’s glorious history. The museum is a source of pride for Vietnamese people.

HUNG KING MUSEUM. VOV.VN – Part of the Hung Temple Historical Relic Complex, Hung King National Museum in Viet Tri city, boasts a unique architecture and embodies Vietnam’s glorious history. The museum is a source of pride for Vietnamese people. Built-in the late 1980s, Hung Vuong Museum is a popular destination. Its design is based on the Vietnamese people’s ancient philosophy that the earth was square and the sky was round. Covering nearly 1,000 square meters, the 2-story museum recalls a legend concerning Banh Chung (square sticky rice cake) and Banh Giay (round sticky rice cake).

The museum has nearly 700 original objects and thousands of reproductions which reveal Vietnam’s history from the stone age to the national construction period of the Hung Kings, the Hung Kings’ Temple, and the Hung Kings worshiping rituals. The museum welcomes thousands of visitors a day. It is most crowded on the Death Anniversary of the Hung Kings on the 10th day of the third lunar month.

Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Head of the Guide Team at the museum says she and her colleagues always do their best to teach visitors about Vietnam’s cultural and historical heritage. She said, “The Hung Kings Temple is a worshipping place for Vietnamese people. When they visit the Temple, they never miss a chance to also visit Hung Vuong Museum where many precious items are kept.” Museum visitors see production tools and other objects of the Vietnamese people in each historical period.

Nguyen Thu Huong, a visitor from Hanoi, says: “All Vietnamese people know the legend of Lac Long Quan-Au Co. Thousands of objects at the museum, impressively descended by the guides recall the legend. Visiting the museum and the Hung Kings Temple, I’m so proud of our national history.”

Lang Co town – A quiet retreat for summer escapes

The small Lang Co town in Phu Loc district, Thua Thien – Hue province is located on the root of the imposing Hai Van mountain range. Endowed with over 10km long beach sloping gently to the pure water sea to shape an arc with the long and beautiful sand, Lang Co is a quiet note for summer escape.

NDO – The small Lang Co town in Phu Loc district, Thua Thien – Hue province is located on the root of the imposing Hai Van mountain range. Endowed with over 10km long beach sloping gently to the pure water sea to shape an arc with the long and beautiful sand, Lang Co is a quiet note for a summer escape. Lang Co possesses a distinctive charm every season of the year. In summer, Lang Co treats visitors with mild air, blue beaches, and golden sand, far different from the sweltering heat in other central places.

In autumn, the town is coated with fog and clouds. In winter, when Lang Co is less visited by holidaymakers, the beach and forest are brought back to their pristine beauty. In spring, the town is fuelled with the vitality of fishermen hauling in bumper catches on their first trips to sea in the Lunar New Year. But visiting Lang Co at any time of the year, tourists can enjoy a quiet retreat and feel the harmony between humans, sea and earth. It is said that if you haven’t visited Lap An lagoon, then you haven’t visited Lang Co yet.

The lagoon is one kilometer from the beach. With one side facing the grandiose Bach Ma mountain range and the other facing Lang Co bay, Lap An lagoon is a blend of green forest, hills and deep blue sky. On bright sunny days, the lagoon’s surface shines like a mirror reflecting the shadow of the mountains. The lagoon is at its most stunning at sunset when the sun gradually goes down behind the Bach Ma mountain range. The sunset brings a fascinating purple coat to the scenery. White storks cover the sky on their way to their shelters. Small fishing boats float on the lagoon while fishermen wait for a good haul at the end of the day.

The local fishermen are open-hearted and friendly. Most of them have lived in Lang Co town for generations and have earned their living from the abundant marine resources of the lagoon. Harvesting oysters, which are proudly dubbed as “heavenly pearl” by the locals, have brought a better life for the fishermen. The harvest and farming oysters in Lap An is rather simple. Fishermen utilize blown-out rubber tires, which are cleaned thoroughly in order to make floating oyster cultivation cages on the lagoon. The breeders collect oysters every day and sell them at the markets. The oysters have a rich, sweet and a little bit salty taste.

In the evening, when the wind calms down and blows gently, it is a perfect time to take a ride to the Hai Van mountain pass and admire the beauty of Lang Co from above. Although the road to the mountain pass is quiet, there are many sharp bends, thus the journey is not recommended for new riders. Looking from above, Lang Co bay looks like jade shining amid the forest and mountains. Its green mountains, tropical forests, smooth white sand and crystal clear waters never fail to lure visitors. It is not surprising that Lang Co was voted as one of the world’s most beautiful bays by the Worldbays Club in May 2009.

Dong Van Karst Plateau

With its earth heritage and unique culture of ethnic minority groups, the Dong Van Karst Plateau in Ha Giang province is one of the most spectacular destinations in Vietnam. Located deep inside the Plateau, Meo Vac district is almost untouched and favored by adventurists.

VOV.VN – With its earth heritage and unique culture of ethnic minority groups, the Dong Van Karst Plateau in Ha Giang province is one of the most spectacular destinations in Vietnam. Located deep inside the Plateau, Meo Vac district is almost untouched and favored by adventurists. From Ha Giang province, tourists take the national highway 4C for 43 kilometers to reach Quan Ba district.

Passing over the bumpy Can Ty pass and through pine forests and round zigzagging roads, tourists will arrive in Dong Van Karst Plateau. Sitting 1,600 meters above sea level and covering 2,530 square kilometers, the Plateau shows the typical signs of the development of the earth’s crust. 80% of the plateau is open-cast lime. Dong Van is home to 139 geological heritages, of which 15 are international, 68 are national and 56 are local. In the area’s stone sediments, bio-archeologists have found many fossils which have preserved the history of the plateau in Dong Van in particular and Vietnam’s northeastern region.

Geological diversity and climate shifts over millions of years have created diverse and spectacular rock gardens and rock forests like the Khau Vai rock garden in Meo Vac district which have flower-shaped, bud-shaped, dragon-shaped, and tiger-shaped rocks among many others. There are several rock stacks that look like thousands of seabirds relaxing on the beach. In between the rock, gardens are high mountains and steep hills that make the karst plateau more spectacular.

Geologist Ho Tien Trung said, “According to the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources, and studies of Belgian speleologists, in this region, there are many important findings including the cave system. The discovery of thousands of meters of caves is significant to research and tourism development.” In the Dong Van Karst Plateau, Meo Vac is the most undeveloped area. Until 1965, there was only a small path leading to the township.

Now, a new path winding around the mountainside has been paved to traverse the Ma Pi Leng pass with the steep rocky mountain on one side and the peaceful Nho Que River on the other. The rocky outcrops, small waterfalls, terraced fields, and small thatched houses nestled behind rock walls and peach gardens create a stunningly picturesque landscape. Ma Pi Leng is a must-stop for tourists to the Dong Van Karst Plateau.

Tran Thanh Hoang, a guide in Ha Giang, said, “Tourists call Ma Pi Leng one of the 4 top passes in Vietnam’s northwest. Though it’s shorter than other passes, it’s the most difficult one. In the ethnic minority language, Pi Leng means nose bone which is straight and high. Previously, it was too high for a horse to climb up. Now, the road to the pass has been upgraded to become more level. The work was contributed to by the great efforts of many people. President Ho Chi Minh named it the Happiness Road in the hope that the road would bring happiness to the locals.”

In recent years, Meo Vac district has focused on promoting the development of culture-tourism, especially since the Dong Van Karst Plateau was recognized as a Global GeoPark in 2013. The local infrastructure has been upgraded to make traveling to the district easier. Many local festivals like the Khau Vai Love Market festival, buckwheat flower festival, Gau Tao festival of the Mong, Rain Praying festival of the Lo Lo, Long Tong festival of the Tay, Cap Sac festival of the Dao, and New Year Celebration of the Giay have been revived. The diverse festivals of the locals and the spectacular landscapes have drawn both Vietnamese and foreign tourists to Dong Van and Meo Vac.
