Saigon airport expansion

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The asked for the publication of the Saigon airport expansion project

HCMC – The Ministry of Transport will coordinate with the HCMC government to publicize a plan to expand Tan Son Nhat International Airport next month, as announced during a meeting on key projects of the ministry on August 24.

Reporting on the progress of the airport expansion project, Nguyen Duy Lam, director of the Planning and Investment Department under the Ministry of Transport, said Airport Design and Construction Consultancy Co., Ltd, along with the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, are preparing the plan. The Planning and Investment Department will next week propose the Ministry of Transport report to the Government the solutions, investment and roadmap needed to execute the airport expansion project.

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The asked for the publication of the Saigon airport expansion project early next month so that T3 terminal can be quickly built. In addition, the project to develop functional areas at the north wing of the airport should be unveiled to attract investors interested in the project. At the end of March, the Government approved the Tan Son Nhat International Airport expansion project, worth some VND18 trillion (US$775.4 million).

Accordingly, T3 terminal, with an annual capacity of 20 million passengers, will be built at the south end of the airport, where the current domestic and international terminals of the airport are located. After being expanded, the airport is expected to serve a maximum of 60 million passengers per year.

The southward expansion of Tan Son Nhat International Airport will help reduce the area of land for the project, as well as the terminal construction time and costs. If a new terminal is built in the north wing, its cost would be twice as much as the terminal in the south.

The airport’s north wing, where there now exists a golf course and military area, will be used to develop supporting facilities, including aircraft maintenance.

The Government has required quickly seeking investment capital and completing investment procedures, so that the new terminal could be up and running soon, to ensure the easing of the overload at the airport.
