Phu Quy untouched beauty

Phu Quy in the southern province of Bình Thuan has been hailed as one of the most beautiful islands in the East Sea by readers of US news site CNN. And there are more good reasons to explain why the island is being crowned as the best seaside retreat by young travelers. Located 120km from the resort town of Phan Thiet, Phu Quy is not big or crowded like its better-known counterparts Phu Quoc and Nam Du islands. Phu Quy has no tourist traps or anxious tourists here, which helps the secluded island retain the untouched beauty of its long, sandy beaches and turquoise sea.

Superdong, a high-speed boat operating on the Phan Thiet – Phu Quy route, officially opened at the Phan Thiet Port, in the central province of Binh Thuan, on June 21. The boat is operated by the Superdong – Kien Giang Speedboat Corporation with a total investment of US$2 million. All of the cabins are equipped with air-conditioners, comfortable seats, LCD TV’s, toilets and a VIP cabin, with music and a movie system.

Ticket prices per passenger are VND350,000 each, VND250,000 for children, and VND260,000VND for people with disabilities. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Binh Thuan provincial People’s Committee, Pham Van Nam, emphasized that the launch of the high-speed boat on the Phan Thiet – Phu Quy route not only helps to shorten the time travel between the mainland and the island but also contributes to the local socio-economic development. It is also expected to help Phu Quy island to soon become a popular tourist destination and a fishery logistics center, he added.

Phu Quy Island is located in the middle of the East Sea. It is surrounded by white sandy beaches and nine other isles. The island covers an area of 18 square kilometres and has a population of over 27,000. It is also an important in-between logistical destination linking the mainland with the Truong Sa archipelago. Roughly 56 nautical miles from Phan Thiet city and near the coastal provinces of Khanh Hoa, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the island has huge potential for developing sea and island-based tourism, especially resorts, and ecological and adventure tours. Foreign tourists help clean Mui Ne beach

A foreign tourist group called Keep Mui Ne Nice joined staff from local tourism facilities, organizations, and youngsters in Phan Thiet city in the South Central province of Binh Thuan to collect rubbish along Mui Ne beach on July 12. Every year in May and June, waste and debris are washed by the tide from the East Sea (South China Sea) to the Mui Ne gulf. This year, the amount of waste was substantial, made up of a variety of items – largely broken fishing nets, plastic bottles, and plastic bags – which are buried in the sand along beaches stretching over a kilometer, making it hard to collect.

Kristy Marland, an Australian member of the group who has lived in Mui Ne for six years, said that she is worried about the pollution in Mui Ne. She and her friends often organize cleaning activities on the beach with the hope of raising public awareness of the necessity of keeping the sea clean. According to locals, many groups have exerted efforts to collect rubbish, especially in areas that waste is concentrated. However, these attempts are not enough against the rising tide of careless rubbish-dumping that is seen across the nation. Although campaigns to clean the beach are temporary solutions, they have significantly contributed to raising the awareness of tourism facilities and the community in protecting the sea environment and not releasing waste into the sea.
