TOURAINE AIRPORT HISTORY

Touraine Airport was built by the French colonial government in the 1930s as a civilian airport. During World War II, and the Japanese occupation of French Indochina, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force used it as a military air base. The airport was used by the French Air Force during the French Indochina War (1945–1954). In 1953/54 the French laid a NATO-standard 7,800-foot (2,400 m) asphalt runway at Tourane. During the Vietnam War (1959–1975), the facility was known as Danang Air Base, and was a major United States military base. The airport was expanded to 2,350 acres with two 10,000-foot (3,048 m) asphalt runways.

The 18-month Danang International Airport project has successfully completed on schedule with highest quality. The terminal is opened in May 19 and ready to welcome visitors, especially delegates of APEC Summit 2017. The project was started on November 15, 2015 and is scheduled to be completed in May 2017. This is the big challenge that contractors have to complete the international passenger terminal in 18 months with a total floor area of 48,755 square meters, including two areas and other complex items. However, with the great efforts of all contractors, the project has been successfully complete in accordance with the investor requirements.

ATAD is proud to be the steel structure contractor of the project for structural steel frame and covering items. The project “Passenger Terminal – Danang International Airport” has three main components: an international passenger terminal, an overpass in front of the terminal and a parking area with a total investment of VND3.5 trillion (US$156 million). This is the first social investment project in the Vietnamese aviation sector. The main terminal has a total area of 48,000 m2. ATAD applied in the project a roofing solution characterized by steel space frame. From distance, the lounge roof structure with soft wavy shapes, whose design is inspired by seagulls, is highlighted under Danang’ sun. The new terminal is designed and equipped with modern facilities, featuring 40 ticket counters and ten gates. Its capacity is 6 million passengers a year.

Danang (Da Nang, Đà Nẵng) is the third largest city in Vietnam, located on the shore of the South China Sea which is the part of the Pacific Ocean. Danang lies between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, which is 770 km from Hanoi and 860 km from Ho Chi Minh City. There are only a few sightseeing spots in Danang but furthermore only 100 km from Danang can be found the old royal capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, Hue (Imperial City), and 30 km from Danang lies ancient town Hoi An, which is belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, both have gained fame with its architecture and history.HUE IMPERIAL CITY The Imperial city (Hoàng Thành) lies in the city of Hue, which was once the former capital of Vietnam. The Hue Imperial city is 100 km from Danang (Da Nang, Đà Nẵng), the third largest city in Vietnam, located on the shores of the Chinese coast between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with approximately 800 km from both cities. HUE HISTORY In 1802 Emperor Gia Long founded Nguyen Dynasty and changed Hanoi to Hue. His idea was to reunification North and South Vietnam and he began the construction of the Hue Citadel. The Hue flourished where the rulers tried to fight for the increasing influence of France at any cost. In the year 1885 the French forces responded to an attack of North Vietnam and attacked the Hue Citadel, they burning down the royal library, and collected all precious from citadel. The royal goverment remained in Hue, but they was no longer invited to events of national importance and to various holidays. During the 1968 all world attention was again given to Hue. Although the Americans focused exclusively on protecting the Khe Sanh military base, the North Vietnamese and Viet-Kong troops captured Hue. It was a main news theme in the press all over the world. During the three-and-a-half week period when North Vietnam controlled the citadel, more than 2,500 people were killed (eg, soldiers, wealthy merchants, government employees, monks, priests and other intellectuals). They named them lackeys, who have a blood debt. The United States and South Vietnam responded by sweeping all the neighboring quarters from the ground completely, where they also used a napalm bomb. About 10,000 people were killed in Hue city, including thousands of Viet-kong soliders, 400 South Vietnamese soldiers, 150 US Marines and the rest were civilians.
