Saigon airport expansion

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The asked for the publication of the Saigon airport expansion project

HCMC – The Ministry of Transport will coordinate with the HCMC government to publicize a plan to expand Tan Son Nhat International Airport next month, as announced during a meeting on key projects of the ministry on August 24.

Reporting on the progress of the airport expansion project, Nguyen Duy Lam, director of the Planning and Investment Department under the Ministry of Transport, said Airport Design and Construction Consultancy Co., Ltd, along with the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, are preparing the plan. The Planning and Investment Department will next week propose the Ministry of Transport report to the Government the solutions, investment and roadmap needed to execute the airport expansion project.

Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The asked for the publication of the Saigon airport expansion project early next month so that T3 terminal can be quickly built. In addition, the project to develop functional areas at the north wing of the airport should be unveiled to attract investors interested in the project. At the end of March, the Government approved the Tan Son Nhat International Airport expansion project, worth some VND18 trillion (US$775.4 million).

Accordingly, T3 terminal, with an annual capacity of 20 million passengers, will be built at the south end of the airport, where the current domestic and international terminals of the airport are located. After being expanded, the airport is expected to serve a maximum of 60 million passengers per year.

The southward expansion of Tan Son Nhat International Airport will help reduce the area of land for the project, as well as the terminal construction time and costs. If a new terminal is built in the north wing, its cost would be twice as much as the terminal in the south.

The airport’s north wing, where there now exists a golf course and military area, will be used to develop supporting facilities, including aircraft maintenance.

The Government has required quickly seeking investment capital and completing investment procedures, so that the new terminal could be up and running soon, to ensure the easing of the overload at the airport.

Hoi An ancient town

Hoi An Ancient Town is UNESCO heritage site, since 1990. Located in Vietnam, in the province of Quang Nam, only 30 km from Danang. Hoi An was known as a cargo harbor from the 15th to 19th century. Although the port of Hoi An was officially founded by Lord Nguyen in 1595, these areas have previously been inhabited at least 2200 years ago. Hoi An Ancient Town (會安) translates as "peaceful meeting place". In English and other European languages, the town was known historically as Faifo. This word is derived from Vietnamese Hội An phố (the town of Hội An), which was shortened to "Hoi-pho", and then to "Faifo". Originally, Hai Pho was a divided town with the Japanese settlement across the "Japanese Bridge" (16th-17th century). The bridge (Chùa cầu) is a unique covered structure built by the Japanese, the only known covered bridge with a Buddhist temple attached to one side. Hoi An port loses its shine when the European shipbuilding evolved and they were able to get into the Danang Bay by large merchant ships. Moreover, the Danang became the main port for trade in central Vietnam. Large merchant ships arrived from Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, United Kingdom and from America. The first Christian missionaries also visited the Hoi An, which made Hoi An the first city in Vietnam, that encountered Christianity.

This is the first social investment project in the Vietnamese aviation sector. The main terminal has a total area of 48,000 m2. ATAD applied in the project a roofing solution characterized by steel space frame. From distance, the lounge roof structure with soft wavy shapes, whose design is inspired by seagulls, is highlighted under Danang’ sun.

The new terminal is designed and equipped with modern facilities, featuring 40 ticket counters and ten gates. Its capacity is 6 million passengers a year.

There are no tourist traps or anxious tourists here, which helps the secluded island retain the untouched beauty of its long, sandy beaches and turquoise sea.

Superdong, a high-speed boat operating on the Phan Thiet – Phu Quy route, officially opened at the Phan Thiet Port, in the central province of Binh Thuan, on June 21. The boat is operated by the Superdong – Kien Giang Speedboat Corporation with a total investment of US$2 million. All of the cabins are equipped with air-conditioners, comfortable seats, LCD TV’s, toilets and a VIP cabin, with music and a movie system.

Ticket prices per passenger are VND350,000 each, VND250,000 for children, and VND260,000VND for people with disabilities. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Binh Thuan provincial People’s Committee, Pham Van Nam, emphasized that the launch of the high-speed boat on the Phan Thiet – Phu Quy route not only helps to shorten the time travel between the mainland and the island but also contributes to the local socio-economic development. It is also expected to help Phu Quy island to soon become a popular tourist destination and a fishery logistics center, he added.

Phu Quy Island is located in the middle of the East Sea. It is surrounded by white sandy beaches and nine other isles. The island covers an area of 18 square kilometres and has a population of over 27,000. It is also an important in-between logistical destination linking the mainland with the Truong Sa archipelago. Roughly 56 nautical miles from Phan Thiet city and near the coastal provinces of Khanh Hoa, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the island has huge potential for developing sea and island-based tourism, especially resorts, and ecological and adventure tours.
